Choice is usually a good thing and there is certainly a lot of it when it comes to Supplemental Medicare plans.

• Original Medicare covers many health care services and supplies, but there are many costs it doesn’t cover. A Medigap policy is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill gaps in Original Medicare coverage.
  
• Every Medigap policy must follow federal and state laws designed to protect you, and it must be clearly identified as Medicare supplement insurance. Medigap insurance companies can only sell you a standardized Medigap policy.  Each standardized Medigap policy must offer the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. Cost is usually the only difference between Medigap policies sold by different insurance companies
  
• Medicare Advantage are managed care plans.  Sometimes they include RX drug coverage MAPD (Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug),  The three main types are HMO (Health Maintenance Organization) PPO (Preferred Provider Organization), PFFS (Private Fee For Service). There continues to be a lot of controversy around these plans.  Enrollment in Medicare Advantage by 2017 is estimated to be cut roughly in half, from a projected 14.8 million (under current law) to 7.4 million, accord to the CBO (Congressional Budget Office).
